The marble basin
The Carrara’s Strada dei Marmi is one of the most important marble basins in the world – it has more than 100 quarries, 71 of which are active.
Given the site’s size, Strada dei Marmi’s infrastructure requires a weighing solution capable of handling a high number of weighing operations – more than 600 daily, and a high flow of incoming and outgoing vehicles.
This has an additional complex element related to the transported material – marble dust is among the most dangerous for road safety, so a road-safe solution had to be found.
Our solution
Coop Bilanciai specialises in creating automated, efficient, and safe weighing systems for quarries.
We designed a tailor-made solution for Strada dei Marmi that included:
- A fully automated downstream weighing system with four fully automated weighing courses, equipped with four galvanised weighbridges measuring 18x3m and carrying capacity of 80t each
- Four self-service weighing terminals complete with innovative Logis Diade software for managing weighing data and monitoring overloads
- Barriers and cameras that regulate and speed up the transit of vehicles, using an automatic number plate detection which stores four photos taken from two different perspectives
Strada dei Marmi achieved a system designed to handle up to 1,200 trips/day, without creating queues.
The average time for the entire weighing operation including entry into the weighbridge, data entry by the driver, photographic capture and exit, takes just 35 seconds.
